Alexander Ungermann
ECVS residencyAlexander Ungermann, DVM, is a dedicated German equine veterinarian with a strong focus on equine orthopedics, sports medicine, and surgery. He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from Ghent University, Belgium in 2018 and began his clinical career with a rotating internship at Pferdeklinik Leichlingen GmbH, one of the largest and most modern equine referral clinics in Germany, offering the full spectrum of equine medicine. This intensive training period enabled him to gain extensive clinical and practical experience and laid the foundation for his subsequent orthopedic and surgical specialization.
Since 2020, Alexander has focused on equine orthopedics, sports medicine, and surgery. In 2023, he began his ECVS residency under the supervision of Prof. dr. Astrid Rijkenhuizen (DECVS) and Dr. Julien Racine (DECVS), further deepening his expertise in advanced surgical techniques and evidence-based clinical practice. His primary surgical interests include orthopedic procedures and soft tissue surgery, with particular academic focus on his residency research project investigating bursoscopy of the navicular bursa via a transthecal approach.
Alexander is committed to delivering high-quality veterinary care through precision, continuous learning, and collaboration. He strongly believes that optimal patient outcomes are only achieved through teamwork, guided by his professional principle: “Only as a close-knit team can we achieve true success in treatment.”
His work combines clinical passion with a strong commitment to advancing equine surgery and enhancing the long-term athletic performance of horses. He firmly believes that, despite the wide range of modern therapeutic options available, a client- and horse-centered, and above all pragmatic, approach to medical treatment should always take precedence.
Outside his professional activities, he is a passionate hunter and cattle breeder and values spending quality time with his family.
